What is representation?
Lo: To explore the concept of representation and stereotypes

Representation is how the truth or scenario is portrayed by someone or a group. Using the media.

Positive representation of teenagers in the media

I think this is good representation as it shows him celebrating his achievement in sport at 17

I think this is good representation because in the tv show Gilmore Girls she is a hard working, kind teenager. And in this image she is smiley and happy about going to school and is prepared for study.

A stereotype is a generalised representation of a person, place or thing.

3) How far the representation of gender is similar
4) How far the representation is different

On the two magazine covers the star vehicles are not represented stereotypically, Tom Daley is wearing pink and his pose is not 'masculine', Rihanna is portrayed as powerful and a 'new man' which is not usually how women are represented. As well as this, the cover lines have unsteryotypical topics like in GQ maternity and in Cosmo porn which are not usually discussed within their target audience. Their genders ,overall, are very unsteryotypical over the whole cover of the magazine from their poses to the cover lines relating to them.

According to feminist GQ has a history objectifying women, which promotes a chauvinist mindset
Beginning in the 1990s the magazine pivoted from a near strict pattern of men only and had women on the cover
Women unlike men were shot far less than fully clothed
GQ often depicts women differently to men
The magazines website had a section targeted to men) about women
They also have a list called 'sexiest women' and one called 'men of the year'

GQ targets its audience with star vehicles. However when a man is on the cover the representation is different to a woman, but they are still aimed at conservative men. Women are sexualised and very objectified for men where as the men are very professional and powerful (still targeted at the men)

Cover analysis- Media language

Typography-  Text's colour, shape, size, strokes, font
The text is all in a sans serif font, connotes with masculinity and shows it links with current affairs and modern. All the text is black which has conservative, traditional, simple connotations. A lot of the text is in block capitals keeping withe the theme of masculinity. Like the block capital, bold masthead.

Colour Palette
The colour palette is cream, beige and white with a olive green masthead but the colours are very natural. They are all modern without a pop of colour, simplistic, dull and sophisticated. These colour themes are not stereotypically associated with men.

Layout-
The masthead is in the top left corner as this is where we start reading (left to right). Then it has cover line in the right and below cover lines in the left. This is using the Z pattern which is a magazine convention.

Anchorage text- any text that gives the meaning of the image

Analyse the cover for how media language has
been used to create different meanings-
  Main Image
  Anchorage Text
  Coverlines
  Layout

Media Language has been used in many different ways to provide multiple different meanings. Firstly, the main image shows her importance, the use of the colour red for her clothing and the background shows her courage and her strength, considering what she has been through at such a young age, and continues to show the high status she has and the respect she has gained from the public and from vogue itself. It uses a medium close up to draw our attention to her face and her expressions whilst also allowing us to see that she is wearing a hijab. Her hijab relates to her faith and religion of islam, the red colouring shows her sacrifice for the children she is fighting for. The red being constant in her clothes and the background draws our attention to her face this allow us to relate more to her as a person rather than a cover star. The red is chosen over any other colour because it links to her brave activism for young girls education.

Secondly, the anchorage text says the 'extraordinary life of Malala' this along with 'survivor, activist, legend'  emphasises her significance and high status she has in society. First she was a survivor but she did not let that define her and Vogue has gone on to recognise that as she becomes a activist and ultimately a Legend. The word legend is also written in a gold font to show the authority and worth she holds within society and how life changing she has been to young girls especially those in Pakistan Calling Malala a legend is a very high compliment as most often a legend connotes something of the past and this indicates her being a Legend within her own lifetime and how quickly she has done it, from being a teenager who survived a horrific experience to taking that in her stride and helping others. The cover line and anchorage text continues to show the reader the respect Vogue has for Malala and how highly regarded she is within society today.

Lastly, the layout is stereotypical as it follows the general Z layout. This layout is used to emphasise to the reader the important parts of the magazine cover, the masthead, the cover star (Malala) and the main cover line (survivor, activist, legend). This gives the idea that Malala and her journey is just as important as Vogue and they have recognised that. It also continues to bring our attention to her face and in particular her eyes. This means the readers focus is on Malala instead of the other cover lines. The use of this layout and her hijab and background being red means she is the main focus as she stands out more.

In the past, muslims have been represented as characters with no romantic relation, not funny, straight males. They are rarely represented as anything more than terrorists and extremists.

In terms of ethnicity the vogue cover shows its progression as the cover star (Malala) and the celebrities mentioned in the cover lines are not white which challenges stereotypes.

Being female in this cover is being represented in a positive but in some cases stereotypical way

According to this cover females are interested in love and relationships and beauty and fashion

This is and isn't stereotypical, her being on the cover is not stereotypical but some of the cover lines are.

Explain how both ethnicity and gender have been represented on the front cover.

Ethnicity is represented in an anti-stereotypical way. For example, there are three people on the cover Malala and two mentioned in the cover lines, Jourdan Dunn and Anthony Joshua. This is anti-stereotypical because none of them are white which challenges usual magazine conventions. As well as this Malala being the cover star is also anti-stereotypical as a conventional women's fashion magazine cover star is white, blonde with faire features. Having Malala on the cover challenges this stereotype and shows Vogue progression in terms of diversity within ethnicity.

Gender is also represented in an anti-stereotypical way. For example, the cover line 'fighting talk' is anti-stereotypical this is because usually women are portrayed as delicate. As well as this, the main cover line calls her a 'activist' shows the progression of Vogue and society as a whole giving individual women a voice and allowing them to fight for what they believe and empowers women. This goes against general female stereotypes and allows the reader to see Malala as someone who holds power and authority which continues to challenge stereotypes. However, gender has also been represented stereotypically. The cover lines 'love after lockdown' and ' summer beauty' supports the stereotypes that women only care about appearance and relationships. This is supported by her femininity in the cover image, she is wearing makeup and is wearing silk, delicate clothing. This furthers the idea that women's main aim is too care about their looks and portrays her as gentle. Her pose continues to show her delicacy and softness.

Malala 25mark Question

Do Now

1) Similarities and differences ✓
2) If you agree or disagree ✓ Give an opinion
3) 5 ✓ 4-5
4) Sterling GQ cover or Malala Vogue cover ✓
5) Media language and representation

Similarities
- Both women are empowered/ confident
- Both show diversity, Kim is Armenian- American and Malala is muslim

Differences
- Kim is more stereotypical: likes beauty, fashion
Malala is anti stereotypical : not worried about looks (not main focus)
- Medium close up vs medium long shot
- Kim is wearing a much more revealing outfit compared to Malala

This shows there are more differences than similarities.

In these covers the representation of gender shows more differences than similarities.

One difference we can see in the covers is the shot the used to represent the two women. In the Elle cover, Kim is photographed with a medium long-shot. This means that she has more skin on show, connoting with a stereotypical representation of women where women only care about looks and their figure, which supports magazines convention when representing women it also attracts the male gaze which often happens in female fashion magazines. However, on the vogue cover Malala is portrayed using a medium close- up which draws focus to her face and who she is as a person rather that her body. This challenges magazine stereotypes as very little of Malala's skin can be seen and it makes sure the readers attention is on what she has been through. This contrasts the Elle cover which supports the stereotypes.

Another difference on the covers are the cover lines. In the Malala Vogue cover one of the cover lines is "fighting talk" this challenges the stereotype usually portrayed in magazines that women only care about appearance and are too delicate to fight and have an opinion which also challenges a prejudice (which is slowing fading) that women are incapable. This  can link back to the war effort during WWII where women were judged to be useless until later into the war when they were able to do the some of the same jobs that men could. It can also link to women fight for suffrage where they were  not given the right to vote in the late 1800s and early 1900s. This supports the main cover line "survivor, activist, legend" this also shows how women can become powerful activists, even after surviving a traumatic experience. However, on the Elle magazine cover, the cover lines are all about fashion or beauty for example, "fashions new minimal" or "the best foundation in the world". This supports a more stereotypical representation of women, women are shown to care mainly about how they looks rather than becoming a strong woman like Malala.

A third difference on the covers is the colour palette. On the Vogue cover, the main colour is red which has connotations of courage, empowerment and superiority. This links with Malala's journey to becoming a 'Legend' and an activist who fights for the rights for young girls education. This relates to vogues morals and aims to empower women, it is also obvious how Vogue respect and look up to Malala as a influential figure. As well as this it draws attention away from her body as the only thing which is not coloured red (as she is wearing a red hijab) is her face. However, on the Elle cover, the main colours are pink, white and grey, especially the pink colour is very stereotypical when representing women. Contrastingly to the Vogue cover, the colour draws attention to her body as the main bold coloured word (confidence) is on her leg, bringing focus to it.

Although there are some similarities, both covers show the women as empowered and confident. The main way in which this is similar is through the cover lines. The main cover line on the Elle cover is "Confidence" and the main cover line of the Vogue cover is "survivor, activist, legend" they both show the women as strong and independent which is not usually stereotypical for a representation of women. As well as this the Elle cover talks about "career mistakes" and the Vogue cover "fighting talk" these are more unconventional topics to be discussed in women's magazines.

I think the two covers portray very different representations of women. Almost all aspects of the two magazines contrast each others representations.

Q1:
- Use connotations
- Further develop analysis
- Use DEL structure

Improvement: Q1 a

The Vogue magazine cover uses the main image to communicate meaning. The main image features Malala wearing red, they have done this to convey Malala's courage , as red hold strong connotations of courage and bravery, through her life. It communicates to the reader that she has had a significantly challenging life and has used those experiences to help others. As well as this, through the use of direct address, Malala is staring into the camera an the reader. They also use a medium close up which is unconventional for a women's fashion magazine. They have drawn the readers the readers attention to her face and specifically her eyes.

Q2:
Social context- what was going on in society at the time the text was written
Use two points
The US and Troops were leaving Afghanistan so Malala and others were worried about the Taliban so she had been in the press a lot.

Improvement 2a:
During the time around the release of the cover (2021) the covid 19 pandemic (lockdown) has recently ended. This has not majorly influenced the cover but it has had an affect on some aspects as its relevant to the reader. For example, the cover line 'love after lockdown' this would not have featured in the cover if not for the pandemic. Vogue magazine has a whole topic in the magazine has a whole section dedicated to a 'return to dating' this was as a result of the social context.
